Nike dropped Michael Vick

Vick dogfight

Many friends of us participated to The Human Society of the United States campaign and other initiatives in order to persuade Nike’s CEO to drop Michael Vick, the Atlanta Falcons star, after his passion for dogfighting became public. We would like to thank you all of you!

Recognizing that social responsibility and conscience come before profits, Nike announced on Friday evening that the company dropped accused dogfighter Michael Vick. Their statement said in part, “Nike has suspended Michael Vick’s contract without pay, and will not sell any more Michael Vick product at Nike owned retail at this time.”

Giant dogs!

>   Boston Woofstyle  —  SNIF  @  3:09 pm

What is the biggest dog you ever met?
Liz was very impressed by this superbig guy that she met in a shop in Boston - his snout is twice her face!

In the news, we found a couple of other impressive dogs.

Three-year-old Samson is a cross between two of the biggest breeds, the Great Dane and Newfoundland. He is 37in at the shoulder, stands 6ft 5in on his hind legs and weighs an astonishing 19st 10lb.

Even more impressive is Wendy, also known as the Incredible Hulk of Hounds.

She was born with a genetic defect: she is “double muscled”, and she weighs 4st4lb!

Pit Bull helps police to catch a thief

>   The Howler  —  SNIF  @  9:18 am

From the Boston Globe yesterday:

“A dog who apparently just wanted to go home helped Gloucester police catch a suspect in a robbery early today.

Ricci Marshall, 27, of Gloucester, allegedly brought a pit bull along when he tried to rob a convenience store on Maplewood Avenue at about 5:30 a.m., Officer Chris Frates said.

But Marshall met with determined resistance from the night clerk and a customer — and after fighting with them, he fled the store without the dog, Frates said.

While some officers searched for the suspect, one followed the dog as it headed home.

The dog’s owner told police he had been in all night, but he also allegedly said Marshall was staying with him — and took the dog for walks in the morning.

Marshall was arrested and faces arraignment today in Gloucester District Court on several charges, including unarmed robbery, Frates said.”

What about a professional video about your best friend…

Dog and ice cream

Want to celebrate your dog? Is his birthday approaching? What about a DVD about his or her story?! Seems that Reflection Films Pet Stories, a production company based in Boston that specializes in Pet Story on DVD, can do a good job in creating special stories about our dogs.

Story can either be a slideshow of images of your pet (photographs and/or home videos) accompanied by music, or it can also include interviews with you, the pet owner. The interview is a fun opportunity to affectionately recount your pet’s entertaining antics and playful moments.

Reflection Films donates a portion of its Pet Story profits to the Animal Rescue League of Boston.

A video about Dotty

>   Shelters, Boston Woofstyle  —  SNIF  @  10:02 am

Do you remember Dotty, the sweet girl who lives at the Animal Rescue League in Boston? We walked with her in the South End last week. The ARL recorded a video about her, to help her to find a new family.

Dotty is searching for a new family

>   Shelters, Boston Woofstyle  —  SNIF  @  6:05 pm

Dotty is a lovely 10 year old spayed female who lives at the Animal Rescue League in Boston. Her permanence at the ARL will hopefully be short. She is looking for a new owner. Unfourtunately, her previous dad couldn’t take care of her anymore.
I walked Dotty in the South End last weekend, during my volonteering hours at the ARL.
We took a walk along Warren Ave, where a moving sale was taking place. Dotty stopped to say hi to some of the local dogs there.

We then stopped at Polka Dog for a treat. Dotty met Laura and her three wonderful Yorkies: Sophie, Teddy and Winstor. Laura, other than three dogs, also owns six cats (all of them adopted!) and she is an exceptional activist in defending animals’ rights.

We then stopped at Peters Park, in Washington Ave. Due to legal reasons, Dottie can’t go inside of dog parks, as any other dog from the ARL. So, she can’t wait to be adopted to finally join her friends inside of the park!
