Greater Swiss Mountain Dog in grass outside

With the warm weather already here, Stuart would like to share a few tips about dog safety during the hot summer months! Of course, each dog varies in terms of how much they can and cannot tolerate. As a Greater Swiss Mountain dog, Stuart has a double black coat of fur. This means he gets very hot very fast! Below are some steadfast rules that apply to every dog.

Rule Number One: Always bring cool water whenever walking with your dog.
Some dark colored dogs may need to be hosed down to cool off.

Rule Number Two: Never leave your dog in a car.
Even with the windows rolled down, it only takes a few minutes for the dog to get heatstroke!

Rule Number Three: Walk at night.
Walk your dog in either the early morning or evening, but never after a meal or when the weather is humid.

Rule Number Four: Beach day no-nos.
Unless you can guarentee that your dog has a shaded spot and plenty of fresh water, it is not a good idea to bring your pooch to the beach. Also, be sure to thoroughly rinse off all salty dogs!

  1. I wish there was an easy way to have a water bottle and a water dish with you at all times. It can be kind of inconvenient but is very important.
